I found this strange object and had no idea what it was; the answer turned out to be surprisingly simple.
It had a smooth, polished surface, a slightly golden-brown color, and was small enough to fit comfortably in one hand.
At first glance, it seemed too carefully designed to be random, and yet too surprising for me to immediately identify it.
Naturally, my mind began to formulate theories.
My first hypothesis was that it might be a hair accessory.
A few seconds later, I wondered if it belonged in a makeup bag or a bathroom drawer.
Then another possibility occurred to me.
Perhaps it was one of those objects about which one does not ask questions unless one is perfectly prepared for an embarrassing explanation.
So I did what many disoriented people would probably have done in the same situation.
I picked it up.
I turned it over several times.
I examined it from all angles.
I pretended to understand exactly what I was seeing.
