None of them showed aggression. When they saw Lidia enter, they all began wagging their tails and approaching her.
"Ma'am... how long have you been here?" one of the police officers asked, lowering his flashlight.
—For almost three years —she replied, drying her eyes.
Ovidiu finally understood: all that meat was for the animals. Lidia told them that, after her son's death, she couldn't bear to see abandoned animals. She started with two dogs. Then there were five, then ten, and more kept coming.
A shelter made with love and scrap metal.
The building wasn't luxurious, but it was clean. There were containers of fresh water, old blankets, straw, and makeshift cages for the sick animals. Hanging on one wall was a notebook where Lidia meticulously recorded each rescue: where she had found the animal, what treatment it received, and whether it had been adopted.
"She has given dozens of animals up for adoption..." murmured an agent as he flipped through the pages.
—Sixty-eight—she replied. —But nobody wanted these ones.
Her pension wasn't enough, so she collected cardboard and scrap metal. Everything she earned went toward food and medicine. She hadn't asked for help because she feared the animals would be taken to overcrowded shelters where the old and sick would struggle to find homes.
The community's response
The news spread quickly. To the surprise of many, the city didn't react with anger, but with solidarity. Ovidiu, the butcher, was the first to offer to donate meat every week. A veterinarian agreed to treat the animals free of charge. Volunteers arrived to clean the warehouse and build safer shelters.
The municipality, together with an animal protection association, secured a licensed plot of land where the animals were gradually relocated. There they would receive proper care and have a better chance of being adopted. Lidia was invited to stay on as a permanent volunteer.
The real lesson
On her first day at the new shelter, one of the police officers went to visit her. He found her petting an old dog that had fallen asleep on her lap.
"You know what?" he said, smiling. "When we received the complaint, I was convinced we were going to uncover something terrible."
Lidia looked at him calmly and replied in a low voice:
