My husband left me for my cousin during my maternity leave – at their wedding, the DJ's announcement plunged the room into deathly
The DJ didn't move.
Gabriella turned to Tyler, her voice trembling. "Tell me it's not true."
"It's been taken out of context," he quickly stated.
"Out of context?" thundered his father, rising from his seat. "These are financial documents!"
Tyler clenched his jaw. "I had expenses. Transitions. It wasn't stable back then."
My mother then stood up. "Your daughters also need stability. They are babies."
Silence settled in like a curtain.
"Tell me it's not true."
Gabriella stared at him. "Did you lie to your ex-wife?"
He hesitated.
"I didn't lie," he said in a weak voice. "I just didn't tell the whole story."
The bride's father let out an incredulous laugh. "That's what you call a false declaration."
The murmurs turned into bitter accusations.
"You said she was exaggerating!"
"You told us she was bitter."
"I defended you!"
"I didn't lie."
Gabriella recoiled as if Tyler had bumped into her. "You told me she was draining your energy. You said she was trying to ruin your life."
Tyler then looked at me.
As if it were my fault.
" You planned this," he accused.
“Yes,” I replied, my voice unwavering.
"You embarrassed me in front of everyone," he said.
"No," I replied calmly. "You did that when you lied to me."
" You planned this."
Gabriella's mother grabbed Tyler's arm. "Is it true? Did you pretend to have financial difficulties paying for this wedding? Answer me!"
Tyler rubbed his forehead. "I didn't think it would matter. The court doesn't note everything down to the smallest detail."
"That's not the point!" Gabriella exclaimed. "You said you were making sacrifices to build our future!"
He reached out to her. She withdrew her hand.
The coin was no longer in his favor.
He was the charming boy who had "lost love".
Now, it was he who had robbed his children to finance their honeymoon.
"That's not the point!"
I took a step forward, not to rejoice triumphantly, but because silence demanded it.
"The first month after the divorce," I said calmly, "he sent me half of the alimony and told me he couldn't afford to pay more."
I looked around me.
"At first, I believed him."
That part was true.
"When the second reduced payment was accompanied by another excuse, I started checking our old joint statements. I compared the dates. I stayed up during midnight feedings, taking screenshots while rocking twins who didn't understand why their father wasn't there."
"At first, I believed him."
Gabriella's gaze turned towards me.
“My sister,” I continued, nodding towards Hannah, “became friends with Gabriella. Not to create drama, but to gather evidence.”
Hannah stepped forward slightly, chin held high. "You sent me the supplier invoices, the bank statements. You were proud of that."
Gabriella's face turned crimson.
"Were you spying on me?"
“We were documenting reality,” Hannah replied evenly.
I glanced at Tyler.
"You were proud of them."
"You thought I was too upset to notice," I said. "I could have gotten over your betrayal with Gabriella. But you thought I would just accept whatever you sent me and keep quiet."
He did not deny it.
The screen behind him froze on a final split image: his message reporting financial difficulties alongside the deposit paid for the reception hall.
Perfectly aligned.
Gabriella suddenly tore off her veil.
"You've ruined everything!" she shouted at him.
"No, you're exaggerating," he retorted, his voice rising.
He did not deny it.
His father intervened. "That's dishonest. And it's outrageous."
The chairs began to scrape the floor when the guests stood up.
An aunt whispered, "I can't stay for this."
Another woman shook her head. "Those poor babies."
Our loved ones were finally talking about Lily and Emma.
"Those poor babies."
Gabriella's voice broke, hoarse. "If you lied about that, what else did you lie about?"
He opened his mouth. Nothing came out.
"I want this marriage annulled," she said in a loud, trembling voice. "I will not remain married to someone who practically abandons his own children."
I found his anger ironic.
Tyler seemed stunned, as if he truly believed he had done nothing wrong.
"I want this cancelled."
The guests began to head towards the exits. Conversations overlapped.
"It's a complete disaster."
"I felt that something was wrong."
"He moved on too quickly."
I felt Hannah take my hand, our mother already standing next to us with a smile.
"Are you ready?" she whispered.
I nodded.
"It's a complete disaster."
Before leaving, I watched Gabriella one last time.
"Congratulations," I said softly. "You've won the prize."
There was no irony in my tone, just the truth.
Tyler thought he had won by leaving our house. He believed he had escaped diapers and responsibilities to enter a bright new world. He was convinced I would be too exhausted, too devastated, or too busy raising twins to ever dare challenge him.
He underestimated me.
He took for granted what a mother could do when her children were treated as optional expenses.
"You won the prize."
As we headed towards the doors, other family members followed us instead of staying with the bride and groom.
Outside, the cool night air caressed my face and I breathed deeply.
Inside the ballroom, Gabriella was still screaming.
My mother put her arm around my shoulders. "You did a good job."
I smiled. "Thank you for your help and Hannah's throughout this process."
Hannah smiled.
"You did a good job."
I cast one last glance at the illuminated windows of the ballroom.
I understood that Tyler thought he was being bold by abandoning us, but it only revealed his true nature to everyone.
A liar, a cheat, and a man who thought that loving meant moving on rather than committing.
And as we walked together towards the car, I no longer felt devastated.
I felt stable.
Because he didn't win.
He exposed himself.
